We explain, in understandable terms, how insurance works...
There are 410,176 brokers and agencies in the US with 911,400 licensed life and health agents.
Of those,
Some are licensed in all states, some in a few, and some in only one.
Some represent lots of companies, some a few, some only one.
Some sell all kinds of insurance, some specialize in a few types, some only one.
All kinds of variations everywhere. So, too, competency varies among agents, agencies and companies; sad, but true.
By statute, agents (aka producers and brokers), who work independent of or within an Agency, are professional credentialed entities, meaning, they are licensed by, appointed by, trained by, certified by, overseen by and disciplined by, the companies they represent, the Federal Government and each State they are licensed within. All of these oversight entities charge Agents/Agencies to be lawful and ethical. The ethical standard, in simple terms, is to fit the insured to the best insurance for them in their circumstances. However. As we all know, dealing with humans, means lots of varibles so either intentionally or not intentionally, not everyone behaves to the designated standard. Usually, a local Agent/Agency has nowhere to hide, so they tend to be lawful and ethical.
Your Agent/Agency has Standing which means they can communicate with the company on your behalf.
An Agent/Agency has experience in dealing with companies and insurance situations which means a higher level of understanding of insurance complexities and an ability to explain, in plain terms,, how insurance works.
And, by statute, Agents/Agencies work at no charge to the consumer. The companies support the cost where, again, by statute, there is no added cost to have a local agent/agency. Nor is there a discount to deal direct with a company.
